Social Life weaves together the subtleties of human connection, the overlooked details of social interactions, and the transient nature of moments through a visual lens. By capturing friends in moments of socialisation - yet purposely omitting their faces - the focus shifts away from traditional portraiture to explore the body language, gestures, objects, and the environment that truely defines the sense of the moment. The absence of faces creates space for abstraction: the shapes, the colours and the forms of the scene are now able to take centre stage, encouraging the viewer to consider the fleeting, ephemeral nature of the experiences. Incorporating film photography as the medium grounds this exploration in a sense of immediacy and nostalgia, evoking the tactile, raw quality of capturing moments in real-time. Using film is a deliberate choice to document the ‘currentness’ of these social interactions, offering a sense time, and of authenticity and imperfection. Overexposed shots and the flash photography aesthetic recreate the spontaneity of those unguarded, fleeing moments - where light bleeds into the composition, much like the moments themselves bleed into memory. It is this delicate, overexposed balance that captures the ontological essence of social exchange, where meaning is not fixed, but rather created in the tension between what’s visible and what is left unsaid.
